چکیده

We consider the observational signature of the dynamical eeects on the lumi-nosity function of globular clusters. For the three best studied systems, in Milky Way, M31, and M87, there is a statistically signiicant diierence between the inner and outer population of globular clusters. In all cases the inner clusters are on average brighter than the outer clusters (0:26 < m 0 < 0:84) and have a smaller dispersion in magnitudes (0:04 < < 0:53), with the larger diierences for the local, better observed samples. The diierences are of the type that would be expected if the inner population had been depleted by tidal shocks. The results suggest that the inner population suuers substantial evolution from its initial distribution and cannot not be used as a standard candle without correction for dynamical evolution.

Evolution of Globular Clusters: Effects of Tidal Shocks

The semi-analytic theory of tidal shocks proves to be a powerful tool to study tidal interactions of star clusters and satellite galaxies with their massive hosts. New models of the globular cluster evolution employ a combination of analytic estimates, solutions of the FokkerPlanck equation and direct N-body simulations. The models predict large destruction rates for the Galactic globular clust...

The initial distribution and evolution of globular cluster systems

This work considers the evolution of globular cluster systems in galaxies. Here globular cluster systems start with power-law mass functions φ ∼ M−α with slopes around 2.0, similar to what has been observed for the young luminous clusters seen in merging and interacting galaxies. We then follow the orbits of the clusters through their parent galaxy, allowing various destruction mechanisms to di...

The Missing Link in Star Cluster Evolution

The currently most popular models for the dynamical evolution of star clusters predict that the power-law Cluster Luminosity Functions (CLFs) of young star cluster systems will be transformed rapidly into the universal Gaussian CLFs of old Milky Way-type “globular” cluster systems. Here, we provide the first evidence for a turn-over in the intermediate-age, approximately 1 Gyr-old CLF in the ce...

The Globular Cluster Luminosity Function as a Distance Indicator : Dynamical

The dynamical evolution of the globular cluster systems in galaxies is predicted, based on the standard dynamical theory normalized to the example of the Milky Way. The major processes varying with the galactocentric distance are the tidal shocks and dynamical friction. Our simple model explains, on a quantitative basis, the observed diierences of the inner and outer populations of globular clu...

We present new BVI ground-based photometry and VI space-based photometry for the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341) and examine luminosity functions in B, V, and I containing over 50,000 stars ranging from the tip of the red giant branch to several magnitudes below the main sequence turn off. Once corrected for completeness, the observed luminosity functions agree very well with theoretical models...

Observational Constraints on the Formation and Evolution of Globular Cluster Systems

This paper reviews some of the observational properties of globular cluster systems, with a particular focus on those that constrain and inform models of the formation and dynamical evolution of globular cluster systems. I first discuss the observational determination of the globular cluster luminosity and mass function. I show results from new very deep HST data on the M87 globular cluster sys...
